This week I made a taper candle holder out of polymer clay. I went searching on Pinterest for the idea and many different candle holders came up. I chose to do this design because it was a step up from the very simple coaster I made last week. I found making the cylinder barrel that holds the candle to be quite tricky as polymer clay is not as malleable as traditional clay, and I had to estimate the diameter of the cylinder because I did not have a taper candle at home.

One other thing I am working to figure out is the baking time of the clay. I have to bake the clay at 275 Fahrenheit for 15 minutes per 1/4 inch thickness of clay. I find myself estimating the time, and fearing that I will overcook the clay. Perhaps I will watch a video or read an article that helps with finding a more precise time when cooking polymer clay.

I find this craft to be really enjoyable as I can make quite practical and useful creations for my home as decor. Next week, I plan on either making a spoon rest or a couple egg cups. i find this craft relaxing after a long day of work and school. I put on a show or music and start working with the clay. I look forward to next week’s creations, and hopefully getting a better understanding of the baking time to thickness ratio!

I used Pinterest for most of my inspiration on all my polymer clay projects 🙂

Emily,

I’m feeling very inspired from your blog post and blog in general! I love the colour scheme you’re following with all of the fun colours, it makes me excited for spring.

I really like that you used Pinterest for sourcing ideas, I haven’t done that yet for my projects and it’s a really good place to collect photos as inspiration. I also agree with you that it’s relaxing doing something with your hands at the end of the day while listening to music or watching a show!

I’m looking forward to seeing more cute items that you create as well as the results of playing around with the heat and timing.

Can’t wait for next week!
